Who we are

Click to enlarge We are the Phonolites, the choir of the Faculty of Sciences, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece.

Our funny name is based on the volcanic rock phonolite.

We are a mixed, four-voice choir (SATB) consisting of about 30 singers mainly of our University.

Our repertoire shows a wide range consisting of Renaissance songs, classical songs, Greek traditional and modern songs as well as songs from other countries, Byzantine hymns, hymns from the Orthodox Holy Liturgy etc.

Click to enlargeThe Phonolites are established in 1998 as the choir of the School of Geology in order to participate in the 25th anniversary of the foundation of the School of Geology. Since 2001 the Phonolites became the choir of the Faculty of Sciences of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

We gave concerts in Greece (Thessaloniki, Athens, Kastoria) and abroad (Spain) with great success. Every year we participate in the Cultural Week of Students organized by the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Parts of our concerts were broadcasted by the national television and radio. We have organized a summer choral camp in Chalkidiki. We were invited in various international choir festivals in Austria, Spain, Portugal, Tunisia, Netherlands, Canada etc. We co-operate with the famous Greek composer and singer Dionysis Savopoulos. Special moments of the choir are:

  • 2000 - Concert with the renowned Lomonosov Moscow State University Academic Choir in Thessaloniki.
  • 2001 - 6th Choir Festival in Agia Paraskevi, Athens.
  • 2001 - EURO CAROL CHRISTMAS FESTIVAL in Bilbao, Spain.
  • 2002 - Concerts with Dionysis Savopoulos at the Concert Hall of Thessaloniki.

Click to enlarge Our prime objective is to be a highly skilled choir dedicated to performing quality repertoire. Up to now our concerts have delighted our audience with their artistic excellence, and we have received recognition for our beautiful sound, innovative program and the ability to sing in different languages.

Conductor of the choir is Efimia Hatziyianni-Toubektsi, teacher of music and distinguished conductor and musician.

Coordinator of the choir is Triantafyllos Soldatos, Assistant Professor of the School of Geology, Faculty of Sciences, A.U.TH.
